Dave Whitlock invited me to spend time with him learning how to correctly tie his flies so that I could pass that knowledge on to others after he was gone. What an honor he bestowed upon me! This school is one way for me to help ensure that folks continue to learn about Dave's fabulous flies.
The NearNuff Sculpin School offers a hands-on experience that aims to provide participants with the skills to expertly tie and fish Dave Whitlock's famous NearNuff Sculpin fly.
You will learn how and why Dave tied this fly and what materials he used. We will delve into the realm of stream-bottom fish … focusing on the main species that this fly imitates: darters, mad toms, sculpins, and stone cats. Insights into the characteristics and habitats of these food forms will help with your understanding of when and where the NearNuff Sculpin fly pattern can be most effectively fished.
This class runs approximately two hours and is broken down into sections:
All tying materials will be provided and additionally, each student will receive:
Students will need to bring their own tying tools: vise, small file or emery board, bobbin, scissors, small flat nose pliers, bodkin, Velcro dubbing brush, and rotating hackle pliers.
All other materials will be provided.
Allen’s goal is for everyone to gain both the practical skills and the confidence to successfully tie and fish Dave Whitlock's NearNuff Sculpin.
