A Complete NearNuff School - For Advanced to Intermediate Fly Tyers
Dave Whitlock invited me to spend time with him learning how to correctly tie his flies so that I could pass that knowledge on to others after he was gone. What an honor he bestowed upon me! This school is one way for me to help ensure that folks continue to learn about Dave's fabulous flies.
The Complete NearNuff School offers a hands-on experience that aims to provide participants with the skills to expertly tie and fish Dave Whitlock's famous NearNuff Sculpin and NearNuff Crayfish patterns.
You will learn how and why Dave tied these flies and what materials he used. We will delve into the realm of stream-bottom fish and crustaceans … focusing on the main species that these flies imitate: darters, mad toms, sculpins, stone cats and crayfish. Insights into the characteristics and habitats of these food forms will help with your understanding of when and where the NearNuff Sculpin and Crayfish fly patterns can be most effectively fished.
This class runs approximately six hours and is broken down into sections:
- Meet & greet.
- NearNuff Sculpin tying instruction:
- Allen will demonstrates how to tie
- Students tie with Allen’s step-by-step assistance
- Each student ties a fly on their own
- The how, why and where about fishing these flies
- Lunch break
- NearNuff Crayfish tying instruction:
- Allen demonstrates how to tie
- Students tie, with Allen’s step-by-step assistance
- Each student ties a fly on their own
All tying materials will be provided and additionally, each student will receive:
- One NearNuff Sculpin and one NearNuff Crayfish personally tied by Allen Rupp to take home as a reference
- A bottle of Zap-A Gap to keep
- A one-year membership to Trout Unlimited - if you are already a member it will extend your membership for one year
Students will need to bring their own tying tools: vise, small file or emery board, bobbin, scissors, small flat nose pliers, bodkin, Velcro dubbing brush, and rotating hackle pliers.
All other materials will be provided.
Allen’s goal is for everyone to gain both the practical skills and the confidence to successfully tie and fish Dave Whitlock's NearNuff patterns.
